Oakland Axes $1.78M Cannabis Job Training Program

Classes were set to begin later this month for a popular Oakland jobs program that partners with Merritt College, but the entire program has now been shelved after the city canceled funding midway through its grant.

The city of Oakland shut off funding to the Cannabis Workforce and On-the-Job Training Initiative this month just weeks before the internship program was set to begin on Feb. 18. 

Xavier Nazario, one of the program’s organizers, said they were already doing background checks for the next cohort of students when they got news from the city that their grant had been cancelled.
