Las Vegas Could Be Losing Tourists Over Cannabis Crackdown

In a city known for saying “yes,” Las Vegas may be losing tourists over one big “no” — cannabis inside casinos.

Researchers examining Nevada’s gaming and cannabis industries found that the long-standing separation between the two could be limiting tourism, especially as visitor preferences continue to shift toward experience-driven travel.

While recreational marijuana is legal in Nevada, its use is largely restricted to private spaces and licensed lounges — and notably, not allowed inside casino-resorts. That creates a disconnect in a city known for offering everything in one place.

According to findings highlighted by CDC Gaming Reports, that gap may be working against Las Vegas as it competes for visitors.

The data makes the shift hard to ignore:

  • About 70% of respondents support cannabis use in casino settings
  • Roughly 40% say they would be more likely to gamble at a property where cannabis is allowed
  • Researchers found little evidence that cannabis use would reduce gambling activity

Translation: cannabis isn’t competing with casinos — it could be driving more people through the doors.
