Workers at New Jersey Extraction Facility Vote to Unionize

Workers at Sun Extractions in Hamilton, New Jersey, have voted to join United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 360 and are currently negotiating a union contract.

In a statement, Hugh Giordano, UFCW Local 360 Director of Organizing, said the 12 workers’ vote to join the union makes the state’s cannabis industry “stronger.”

“Sustainable success for businesses, employees, and communities starts with fair treatment, strong standards, and shared commitments. That’s how jobs in the cannabis industry become long-term careers, and it’s the future these employees are working toward.” — Giordano in a statement

The vote comes amidst a UFCW campaign – dubbed Cannabis Workers Rising – to unionize cannabis industry employees. According to the union, since 2020, the campaign has led to 418 organizing wins in 20 states, including 290 dispensaries and 36 cultivation facilities.

In a statement, UFCE Local 350 President Sam Ferraino said the vote by Sun Extraction workers is “another proof point” that “stronger unions mean stronger industries and stronger communities.”

New Jersey has provisions in its adult-use cannabis laws requiring licensees to sign Labor Peace Agreements as a condition for licensure.
