More Americans Report Daily Use of Cannabis than Cigarettes and Alcohol

Data from the 2025 National Survey on Drug Use and Health indicates there are now more daily cannabis consumers in the U.S. than daily cigarette smokers and drinkers, according to a FOX News Health report.

The latest survey determined there are 21.4 million Americans who are considered daily cannabis consumers, compared to 19.9 million daily cigarette smokers and 17.2 million daily drinkers.

Additionally, the number of daily cannabis consumers increased about 21% from 2022 to 2025, while the number of daily drinkers and daily cigarette smokers have each declined.

Orchestrated by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the survey describes daily cannabis consumption as having consumed cannabis on 300 or more days in the past year, while daily cigarette smokers are described as having smoked every day for the past month.

Alcohol remains the most widely consumed drug in the U.S. in general, with about 129 million people drinking alcohol at least once in the past month. Only 43.8 million Americans consumed cannabis during the same time frame, according to the data.

The annual national survey investigates substance use and mental health concerns among Americans aged 12 and older.

The survey previously determined that daily cannabis use surpassed daily alcohol consumption in the U.S. for the first time in 2022.
