Poll: Majority of Americans Don’t Think Cannabis Use is Dangerous  

A majority of Americans don’t believe cannabis use is dangerous, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports poll which found 37% of adults surveyed believed cannabis is harmful. Just 13% of those polled said cannabis is “very dangerous,” while 55% of respondents said cannabis is “not dangerous” with 27% saying cannabis is “not at all dangerous.” 

Rasmussen asked 1,234 American adults “How dangerous is marijuana use?” 

The poll found respondents split as to whether cannabis use “leads to the use of more dangerous drugs,” with 27% saying it is “somewhat likely” and the same share saying it is “not very likely.” Eighteen percent said it is “very likely,” while 19% said it “is not at all likely,” and 9% said they are not sure.    

The survey ran from September 8-10 with a 95% level of confidence. 

Last September, the pollster found 42% of respondents believed cannabis is dangerous, which was up from the 35% who said cannabis was dangerous when asked by the Rasmussen poll in September 2022. In the 2025 poll, 16% of respondents described cannabis as “very dangerous,” with 51% saying cannabis is “not dangerous,” and 24% who said cannabis is “not at all dangerous.”
