UPS Updates its Hemp Shipping Policy as Federal Ban Looms

UPS has updated its hemp shipping policies as new federal rules prohibiting THC-rich hemp products are set to take effect later this year. Beginning December 11, all hemp products shipped through the carrier must contain a certificate of analysis or test results demonstrating that “the product contains a total THC concentration (including tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) of not more than 0.3% on a dry weight basis,” the company’s updated website states.

All hemp packages must also use the Adult Signature Required Service and “be packaged where the labeling and outer box markings do not identify the contents as containing raw hemp.”

UPS will also “not accept shipments of hemp or hemp derivatives from any location that sells marijuana or marijuana products” and “prohibits the shipment of any synthetic or lab-made cannabinoid compound and their derivatives.”

Shippers remain responsible for maintaining all necessary licenses, registrations, government approvals, and authority required to sell and ship hemp. Businesses must also open a dedicated account and provide UPS with the required licenses and a signed agreement with the carrier.

UPS notes that vape products or any “hemp derivatives intended for consumption through an aerosolized solution are prohibited in the U.S. network, including import and export.”
