New York’s Cannabis Sales Top $4 Billion As Industry Shows Growth

New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that legal cannabis sales have surpassed $4.1 billion since the state opened the first dispensary in 2022.
While New York legalized recreational cannabis in March 2021, legal sales started only in December 2022, when nonprofit Housing Works opened the doors of the first state-sanctioned dispensary.
Since then, over 744 dispensaries have opened and are currently operating across the state.
Governor Hochul said in a statement that when New York legalized recreational cannabis, they promised to build a safe and fair market able to create real opportunity for the communities hit hardest by the decades-long war on drugs. “Topping $4 billion in sales shows that promise is a reality.”
The announcement of this economic milestone comes as the state’s legal cannabis industry has started to lift off after a number of hurdles that have delayed a fully rolled-out adult-use cannabis industry.
