Inside Portland’s Cannabis Packaging Recycling Facility — Oregon’s Most Extensive Program

This Portland-based facility is snagging up plastic cannabis containers across the state and turning them into nursery pots and more. P3 Distributing, located in Portland, just outside of Milwaukie, is Oregon’s most established and extensive recycling system for cannabis packaging. Owner Patrick Caldwell started the program in hopes of mitigating plastic production by the cannabis industry.
In 2015, P3 Distributing, formerly Pat’s Pot Packaging, started selling what it now recycles: plastic packaging. Quickly, Caldwell realized the massive amount of plastic being distributed. The father and son duo, who started P3, decided it was critical that they take responsibility for the packaging being generated by the industry. The company is partnered with hundreds of retailers across the state — about 60% of Oregon’s dispensaries — through a DropBox program, making recycling accessible for patrons.
