Sara Payan: From Cancer Survivor to Podcast Pioneer
In the cannabis community, few voices stand out as powerfully and authentically as Sara Payan’s. Host of the award-winning podcast Planted with Sara Payan and a respected cannabis educator and policy advocate, Payan has dedicated over a decade to reshaping the conversation around cannabis. With a personal journey rooted in resilience and a professional career built on advocacy and education, Payan has become one of the most influential figures in the cannabis space.
A Personal Journey Transformed
Sara Payan’s relationship with cannabis began in an unconventional yet deeply personal way. In her 30s, she was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer. Facing aggressive chemotherapy that nearly took her life twice, Payan turned to cannabis as a tool for survival.
“I was terrified of chemo,” she recalled, “but I was also excited about the possibilities of using cannabis to help me through this.” Cannabis helped her manage debilitating nausea, regain her appetite, and alleviate the pain from treatment—all without the dangerous side effects of conventional opiates.
It was during this time that she realized the profound impact cannabis could have on countless others navigating similar journeys. “I didn’t have anyone to guide me through it,” she said. “I wanted to be that resource for others.”
From Dispensary Work to Industry Pioneer
Payan’s determination to bridge the gap in cannabis education led her to a local dispensary, where she initially planned to work temporarily. But what started as a short-term position turned into a transformative role as the first Director of Education for a dispensary, a role she held for 10 years.
“My work involved creating training programs for staff and helping critically ill patients navigate cannabis menus,” she explained. “It was healing for me to be able to provide the guidance I had wished for during my own cancer treatment.”
Her efforts didn’t stop there. Recognizing the stigma that still surrounded cannabis use, Payan began offering public education classes on topics ranging from cannabis and cancer to modes of use and policy advocacy. During the pandemic, her classes transitioned online, attracting audiences from around the world.
The Launch of Planted with Sara Payan
In 2018, Payan launched her podcast Planted with Sara Payan, an educational series that delves into the multifaceted world of cannabis. Featuring interviews with industry leaders, policymakers, and cultural icons, the podcast has become a trusted source for cannabis enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
“Conversation is normalization,” Payan says. “By engaging with diverse voices, we reduce stigma and inspire meaningful action.”
The podcast has featured high-profile guests such as Congresswoman Barbara Lee, former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, and cannabis advocate Montel Williams. This year, the show announced an exciting sponsorship with Jorma’s Choice, a CBD brand founded by Jorma Kaukonen, legendary musician from Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna.
“It’s an honor to have Jorma’s Choice as a sponsor,” Payan shared. “Jorma’s commitment to wellness through his CBD brand aligns perfectly with our mission to educate and empower listeners.”
Advocating for Policy Reform

Beyond education, Sara Payan has been a driving force in cannabis policy reform. As Vice Chair of the California Cannabis Advisory Committee and a member of San Francisco’s Cannabis Oversight Committee, she has worked tirelessly to address the challenges facing the cannabis industry.
“California’s tax structure is one of the biggest barriers to safe access,” she explained. “We need lower taxes and permitting costs to stabilize the industry and make cannabis affordable for consumers.”
Payan also advocates for comprehensive product testing and better support for small craft farmers. “We hold cannabis to a higher standard than organic farming,” she said. “While safety is crucial, we need balanced regulations that don’t bankrupt small businesses.”
Her advocacy extends to social equity. “Those who risked their lives during prohibition deserve a chance to succeed in the legal market,” she argued. “It’s about creating opportunities and addressing the injustices of the past.”
Partnerships That Matter
The partnership with Jorma’s Choice highlights Payan’s commitment to aligning with brands that share her values. Founded in 2019 by Jorma Kaukonen and his wife Vanessa, Jorma’s Choice offers small-batch CBD products aimed at promoting natural wellness.
“Jorma’s Choice represents everything we stand for: quality, transparency, and empowering individuals to take charge of their health,” Payan said. The sponsorship will include podcast segments focused on mindful cannabis use, industry insights, and policy discussions, further enriching the listener experience.
Jorma Kaukonen echoed Payan’s sentiments. “We believe in the power of natural wellness,” he said. “Partnering with Sara Payan, who is doing incredible work in cannabis education, is a perfect fit for our brand.”
Expanding the Conversation
Planted with Sara Payan continues to grow, reaching a broader audience with each episode. Upcoming guests include actor Jim Belushi, cannabis researcher Amanda Reiman, and music icon Huey Lewis.
The podcast’s mission extends beyond the industry. “I aim to engage not just cannabis insiders but also the general public,” Payan said. “The broader the conversation, the greater the impact on reducing stigma and shaping policy.”
Payan’s dedication to inclusivity is evident in her focus on underrepresented voices, from women and people of color to small-scale farmers. “Representation matters,” she said. “The cannabis community is vast, and every voice deserves a place at the table.”
Looking Ahead
As 2025 begins, Payan is optimistic about the future. She hopes to see progress in federal cannabis policy, including the rescheduling—or ideally, de-scheduling—of cannabis. “We need banking reform and the elimination of 280E,” she said. “These changes would provide the financial stability the industry desperately needs.”
Her goals for the year include highlighting the work of small craft farmers, advocating for better regulations, and continuing to educate listeners through her podcast. “This work is my heart,” she said. “I found my purpose in the most unexpected way, and I’m committed to making a difference.”
