Too Many Dispensaries? State Officials Say New York’s Cannabis Market Is Still Growing

The number of marijuana dispensaries in the Capital Region has nearly doubled. As a new business opened its doors on Monday, NEWS10’s Tyanna Xavier asked the leader of the New York State Office of Cannabis Management (NYSOCM) if there are too many dispensaries in our area.
According to John Kagia, the executive director of NYSOCM, there’s still room to grow within the industry.
“We don’t believe that the market has yet reached capacity or saturation. We do still think that there’s room for more growth in this market because, you know, it’s worth understanding that New York has very strong demand,” said Kagia.
According to Kagia, in New York State there are about 650 licensed dispensaries now operating, including 77 here in the Capital Region. That number has nearly doubled from just two years ago.
