Mass. Voters Opt To Keep Recreational Marijuana Legal

The effort to ban recreational cannabis sales in Massachusetts was defeated with a resounding “no” vote on Tuesday, as voters chose to maintain the status quo and allow the state’s weed industry to continue.

Proponents of the repeal cited a growing body of evidence pointing to the harmful mental health effects of marijuana — including flower and highly-concentrated THC products — particularly for adolescents.

Had voters opted to repeal the law, Massachusetts would have been the first state to reverse course on legalized weed. Instead, voters continued their yearslong trajectory of using the ballot box to liberalize marijuana laws. That began in 2008 when the drug was decriminalized, then in 2012 with the legalization of medical marijuana, and finally in 2016, when voters approved the sale of recreational pot for adults 21-plus.
